Autoracks

The largest freight car in Z scale

As demand for light trucks and SUVs increased, railroads found themselves in need of more bi-level auto racks to handle the increase in business. At the same time intermodal traffic was rapidly switching from trailers to containers and well cars, making many older 89' flat cars available for conversions. Many of these were newer flush deck cars, which could easily be fitted with enclosed auto racks. Today, many are still going strong.

American Z Line is excited to announce that our Autoracks are now available. This project has been a long time in the making, but we think you will agree that it was well worth the wait. Make no mistake, this is the granddaddy of Z scale freight. These impressive cars look fantastic in a unit train, or as a part of any modern mixed fright train. The photo etched stainless steel sides are real metal, and they have different designs based on prototypical accuracy for the corresponding road name. Available in 4-packs and singles, the Autoracks are the new standard for large Z modern freight.

Details Make the Difference

Because we are owned and operated by Z Scale enthusiasts, we know why you love Z: It’s all about the details. We agree. That’s why we spend so much time researching our models and demanding the little extras from our tool makers.
When we designed our GP-7 locomotive, we insisted on changes to the molds that would allow us to offer more versions that are prototypically correct, such as with and without the dynamic break or winterization hatch.
When our designers told us that our SD-70 locomotive hood would have to be 15% wider than it should be to accommodate our Z scale standard setting Faulhaber Coreless motor, we challenged them to come up with a unique solution - and they did. To make our hood units in the correct width, they designed an etched brass plate around the motor that is thinner than injected plastic. It worked so well, we continued it on our GP-7 locomotives. It may be more expensive to produce, be we think it makes a difference worthy of our name.
